Please come to the town hall meeting tonight to express your objections to the city closing the existing animal shelter, and outsourcing it to another area. At the city council meeting this week, the mayor instructed the Acting City Manager to go ahead and begin the process to close the shelter, and to outsource it. The shelter will close unless people raise their concerns and objections in a public way. Attend the meeting tonight, write letters and send emails!!

Hi All:

Please pass this link below on to everyone you know who wants to keep the shelter open. I was at the city meeting last night and the mayor instructed acting the city manager to start with the plan to close down the shelter and outsource the shelter to either Hayward or Fremont. There were only about 11 FAAS/Shelter members there who were for the shelter.

No one else bothered to show up. If you want the shelter to stay open you need get involved. They really do not have agood plan nor do they understand how the shelter is run and the service it provides to the citizens of Alameda. Last year 1,316 animals passed through the shelter. They won’t go away just because it closes and it will not save as much money as they are telling people. They still have to pay for the outsourcing, the animal control officers, the shelter will still have to be open in some capacity to hold the animals until they can be transported. Also who is going to take care of the animals before they are transported. Who is going to clean the cages. Volunteers are not allowed to touch the animals for 10 days because of the hold requirement and until they are tested to make sure it is safe to handle them so they can’t count on the volunteers. They will have to pay someone to do that. On paper it may look good to them but in reality it doesn’t make sense. Also, animals will be euthanized because of lack of space. That currently does not happen in Alameda. The city does not euthanize for time or space.

The history of this started back in the seventies when there was an attempt to ban all dogs from the Golden Gate National Recreation Areas. However, because at that time there had been no studies or no public discussion period given, the courts threw out the ban. So the Feds went back to the drawing board and, decades later, at the tax payer's expense of more than a million dollars, they produced a 17 POUND document about the impact of dogs in the parks, a document, by the way, that is not supported by science.

Now the proposal is back to greatly restrict dogs (Crissy Field, Ft. Fungsten, and others) or ban dogs altogether (Muir Beach and other areas) in all of their parks.

A discussion period is happening RIGHT NOW, giving people a chance to organize, rebutt their "findings," and protest a ban. So far, the proposed ban has caused quite a stir with outcries from dog owners against these injustices.

"The GGNRA proposal is absolutely draconian. They propose, e.g., to ban all dogs - not just off-leash walking - in areas where off-leash walking has been permitted for at least the past 34 years and where the majority of all users are people walking their dogs. (The so-called "New Lands"). Other bans on off-leash walking will effectively reduce the available area in San Francisco and the northern half of San Mateo county to 1/2 of the current Fort Funston and Crissy Field areas.

Both the SF SPCA and San Mateo's Peninsula Humane Society have written letters opposing the GGNRA's restrictive stance.

There will be an "open house" with GGNRA representatives at Cabrillo School, on Crespi Drive in Pacifica on March 9 : 4-8 pm. Please come if you can!

Also - funds are being collected through the Crissy Field organization for a lawyer and an environmental specialist, on the theory that public comment will not be sufficient. (Crissy Field Dogwalkers have legal 501 (c) (4) status). Please donate if you can!

Finally - one last source of information: www.montaradogs.com . The Montara Dog Blog is specifically focused on the New Lands. This is the area where dogs would simply be banned - on or off-leash.

The New Lands comprise virtually all of the open space on the coast north of Half Moon Bay. They run from north of Montara south behind all the communities along the coast down to Half Moon Bay - Moss Beach, El Grenada, Princeton. This is pretty much all the available space. The environmental pressure and degradation on the remaining one mile loop of County park in the area is absolutely predictable. "

I wanted to share a few photos of Poki (my Tibetan Spaniel) and her park pal Mochi playing on the table...fun stuff!

The Grey Muzzle Organization

Nellie was one of the inspirations for The Grey Muzzle Organization. This small Whippet mix of about 10 years was left by her family at a shelter, and was so terrified that she refused to eat. The concerned shelter staff contacted Old Dog Haven. She was rescued by Grey Muzzle founder Julie Nowicki and cared for by her as part of the Old Dog Haven lifelong hospice program. Nellie was a delightful little dog, who leaped with joy when she saw Julie put on her cap and knew it was time for a walk. She was a constant tail wagger and big stuffy lover (although they didn’t last long).
This sweet dog was greatly loved in her foster home. Unfortunately, it turned out that she had a very serious form of kidney disease. She died well loved after several months in her new home.

We remember Nellie with many smiles and wish we had more time with her, but we’re grateful that she ended her life in a safe and happy place, not alone in a cement pen.
A goal of The Grey Muzzle Organization is to help shelters, such as the one that took Nellie in, give senior dogs a second chance to know they are loved.

CALLING ALL PHOTOGRAPHERS!

Announcing a fun new photography opportunity called "Dogs on Camera", a way to participate in the "Raining Cats & Dogs" show, FBCA's upcoming exhibit running February through March 2011.

As part of the "Raining Cats and Dogs" exhibit, we invite YOU to sign up for Dogs on Camera (DOC).

It's simple: Hang around either the Alameda Dog Park (mixed sizes) or the Alameda Small Dog Park (dogs under 30 lbs.) on the weekend of February 5-6 and
then submit one ready to hang piece to FBCA by February 27.

The pieces will be on display, (in either the FB main gallery or our premiere new satellite gallery at Urban Island) for the month of March.

Kelly McDermott must find a new home for Sadey by the end of January.

"Sadey is almost 6 years old, 35lbs, stands on all fours at around 2ft. She is housebroken, current on her shots and is in great shape. Sadey has lots of energy and is very affectionate. She gets along great with other animals, including cats. She is sweet and loyal. She is shy at first, but warms up fast. She doesn't like to be alone in the house for long periods of time. I have left her in the house a lot, and she would get in minor trouble, but nothing big. She isn't fixed yet."

Lucky came from the same home that Domino was in. He is also being fostered by someone from the Alameda Small Dog Park. Lucky is a sweet, exuberant, active and playful mini-Poodle mix. His foster family includes two Chugs, and two cats - Lucky gets along well with all of them! He is house-trained and although spunky, is well -behaved. He would benefit from a puppy training course so he can learn his commands. He is very curious about the world so must always be on leash when outside. He has been known to run out the front door too so his new family will have to be watchful about that, and be conscientious about training him.

We are happy to report that Domino has found his forever home. Thank you to his new owners for adopting this wonderful little fellow!!

Domino needs your help! He and his house-mate Lucky were both left at the Alameda Small Dog Park this week. Their guardians are no longer able to afford food and supplies for them and asked for help in finding them a good new home. Domino is being fostered in Alameda, and really needs someone to adopt him and give him a great new life. He is a very loving, affectionate and playful little guy - and as you can see from his photo, quite adorable looking as well. Domino was accepted right away by his foster family, which includes 3 chihuahua mixes (male & female), a senior terrier mix, and a cat. In other words, he gets along very well with other dogs! We believe him to be about one year old. He has some puppy energy, but in general seems to be a mellow, content fellow. He likes to play with toys, his foster siblings, and is unimpressed with the cat. He was not eating right in his former home, and needs to lose a couple of pounds. Right now he weighs about 25 pounds and should probably weigh around 22. A good quality food, and the right quantity will likely do the trick. We are not quite sure what his mixed breed is, but we are guessing Chihuahua, Boston Terrier?? or perhaps a bit of Beagle too?? Domino is neutered and has had his shots in the last year.

Due to very rainy weather expected on Sunday, October 24th, we have had to reschedule Howl-O-Ween for the following Sunday, October 31st. We hope you can join us on that date!

The Alameda Small Dog Parks'
7th Annual Howl-O-Ween Contest
Sunday, ~~October 24~~ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm (Rescheduled to Sunday, October 31st)

The details and schedule remain the same...

Here is what you can expect to happen:
1 pm:
Registration for the Costume contest begin. Go to the registration table to sign up, and get your line up number. Numbers must be placed on your left front shoulder so that they are very visible to the judges.
1:45 - 2 pm:
All contestants will start lining up in numerical order for the Parade. When everyone is lined up, the Parade will start; one big loop around the park. Please stay in line up when finished, and then the Judges will walk around to see your costumes up close! This is part of the judging process so you and your pet should look your best!
2:15 pm:
The walk past the Judges Table will begin. The Emcee will announce your names, costume title & number and ask you to walk past the Judges. Please feel free to ham it up, but keep the line moving. Most years there are many dogs in the contest.
3:00 pm (approx.):
Depending on how many contestants we have, around 3 pm the walk past the Judges Table finishes, and then the Judges will take a few minutes to decide upon the winning costumes!
3:15 pm:
The winners will be announced and prizes awarded!!

We would love for all the prize winners to be photographed by this years' Howloween photographer, Will Anzenberger so please stick around for a few minutes after you pick up your prize.

We were asked to donate an item for the silent auction that Autobody Fine Art is having today to benefit the Alameda Animal Shelter. It is their 3rd annual fundraiser, Dog Days 3 Pet-a-Palooza.

Look what we came up with...! It's a handmade reversible dog bed. One side is knitted, the other is crocheted. It is really soft and really comfy, and washable too! Drop in to Autobody Fine Art today between 1 pm and 9 pm to bid on this or one of the other wonderful items in the silent auction! The bed was designed and created by Irene Pakel and Carrie Isett.

Time: 9 am to Noon

Where: Alameda Dog Park at Lower Washington Park, Alameda, CA

Registration begins at 8:30 am.

Opening Ceremonies begin at 9:30 am., followed by a walk around the dog parks.

Registration fee is $25 for the first dog, $5 for each additional dog per owner. Each registered dog will receive a bandana. Please remember dogs must be on leash, and must owners must clean up after their four legged friends.

Prizes will be given for the best Relay Dog and for the Owner showing the most Relay Spirit!

I just wanted to say thanks to all the nice people who dug through the sand with my husband and I last Saturday morning, July 18, trying to find his wedding ring...

The effort was very kind :-) My name is Rachel, my husband is Omar and our dog is Max, a black and white Shih Tzu/Lhasa Apso mix.

We normally bring Max to Point Isabel in Richmond and thought to change it up a bit and bring him to this park that Saturday morning!

I didn't get a chance to exchange names since I was so focused on finding Omar's ring, and I was so very grateful to all of you!

Dear Dogs and Cats,

The dishes with the paw prints are yours and contain your food. The other dishes are mine and contain my food. Please note, placing a paw print in the middle of my plate of food does not stake a claim for it becoming your food and dish, nor do I find that aesthetically pleasing in the slightest.

The stairway was not designed by NASCAR and is not a racetrack. Beating me to the bottom is not the object. Tripping me doesn't help because I fall faster than you can run.

I cannot buy anything bigger than a king sized bed. I am very sorry about this. Do not think I will continue sleeping on the couch to ensure your comfort. Dogs and cats can actually curl up in a ball when they sleep. It is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other stretched out to the fullest extent possible. I also know that sticking tails straight out and having tongues hanging out the other end to maximize space is nothing but sarcasm.

For the last time, there is no a secret exit from the bathroom, I will come out eventually! If by some miracle I beat you there and manage to get the door shut, it is not necessary to claw, whine, meow, try to turn the knob or get your paw under the edge and try to pull the door open. I must exit through the same door I entered. Also, I have been using the bathroom for years -- canine or feline attendance is not mandatory.

The proper order is kiss me, then go smell the other dog or cat's butt. I cannot stress this enough!

To pacify you, my dear pets, I have posted the following message on our front door:

To All Non-Pet Owners Who Visit & Like to Complain About Our Pets:

1. They live here. You don't.
2. If you don't want their hair on your clothes, stay off the furniture. (That's why they call it "fur"niture)
3. I like my pets a lot better than I like most people.
4. To you, it's an animal. To me, he/she is an adopted son/daughter who is short, hairy, walks on all fours and doesn't speak clearly.

Remember, Dogs and cats are better than kids because they:

1. Eat less
2. Don't ask for money
3 Are easier to train
4. Usually come when called
5. Never drive your car
6. Don't hang out with drug-using friends
7. Don't smoke or drink
8. Don't worry about having to buy the latest fashions
9. Don't wear your clothes
10. Don't need a gazillion dollars for college, and

11. If they get pregnant, you can sell their children

Jenny Justis found the Alameda Small Dog website and discovered her dog was the Grand Prize winner of the 2005 Howl-O-Ween Costume Contest! They had to leave before the winners were announced and didn't know they'd won. Nicky is a vivacious 13 year old. Congratulations to Nicky & Jenny! And many thanks to Club Canine for the fantastic gift basket!

Did You Know?
Mothballs can potentially be toxic to dogs, cats and other animals, particularly those containing an ingredient known as napthalene.

Foods to Avoid Feeding Your Pet:
- Alcoholic beverages
- Avocado
- Chocolate (all forms)
- Coffee (all forms)
- Fatty foods
- Macadamia nuts
- Moldy or spoiled foods
- Onions, onion powder
- Raisins and grapes
- Salt
- Yeast dough
- Garlic
- Products sweetened with xylitol

Warm Weather Hazards:
- Animal toxins—toads, insects, spiders, snakes and scorpions
- Blue-green algae in ponds
- Citronella candles
- Cocoa mulch
- Compost piles Fertilizers
- Flea products
- Outdoor plants and plant bulbs
- Swimming-pool treatment supplies
- Fly baits containing methomyl
- Slug and snail baits containing metaldehyde

Medication - Common examples of human medications that can be potentially lethal to pets, even in small doses, include:
- Pain killers
- Cold medicines
- Anti-cancer drugs
- Antidepressants
- Vitamins
- Diet Pills

Cold Weather Hazards:
- Antifreeze
- Liquid potpourri
- Ice melting products
- Rat and mouse bait

Common Household Hazards:- Fabric softener sheets
- Mothballs
- Post-1982 pennies (due to high concentration of zinc)

Holiday Hazards:
- Christmas tree water (may contain fertilizers and bacteria, which, if ingested, can upset the stomach.
- Electrical cords
- Ribbons or tinsel (can become lodged in the intestines and cause intestinal obstruction—most often occurs with kittens!)
- Batteries
- Glass ornaments

Non-toxic Substances for Dogs and Cats - The following substances are considered to be non-toxic, although they may cause mild gastrointestinal upset in some animals:
- Water-based paints
- Toilet bowl water
- Silica gel
- Poinsettia
- Cat litter
- Glue traps
- Glow jewelry

If You Think Your Animal Is Poisoned…

In spite of your best efforts, your animal may accidentally become poisoned. Being prepared can save your pet’s life.

Know your vet's procedures for emergency situations, especially ones that occur after business hours. Keep phone numbers for your veterinarian, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center, and a local emergency veterinary service in a convenient location.

Keep a pet poison safety kit on hand for emergencies. Your kit should contain:
- A fresh bottle of hydrogen peroxide 3% (USP)
- Can of your pet’s favorite wet food
- Turkey baster, bulb syringe or large medical syringe
- Saline eye solution to flush out eye contaminants
- Artificial tear gel to lubricate eyes after flushing
- Mild grease-cutting dishwashing liquid for the animal after skin contamination.
- Rubber gloves
- Forceps to remove stingers
- Muzzle (Remember, an excited animal may harm you.)
- Pet carrier

Call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center’s 24-hour emergency hotline at (888) 426-4435. A consultation fee may apply. When you call the center, please be ready to provide:

* Your name, address and telephone number
* If you know what substance your pet has ingested, have the product container/packaging available for reference. You’ll also need to provide information, if you know it, about the amount ingested and the time since exposure.
* Your pet’s species, breed, age, sex and weight
* All symptoms your pet is experiencing

Peanut Butter Biscotti for Dogs

Here' a tasty treat for your little gourmet!

Peanut Butter Biscotti for Dogs
(from the kitchen of Sophie Hamilton)

1 1/2 cups flour
1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 cups wheat germ or oat bran
1 tsp. baking powder
pinch salt
1 egg
2 tbsp. canola oil
2 tbsp. honey
2 tbsp. dry milk powder
3/4 cup milk
3/4 natural peanut butter
1/2 cups chopped peanust or carob chips (optional)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

In a large bowl, combine the flours, wheat germ, baking powder and salt in a medium bowl; stir together the egg, oil, honey, milk powder and water. Add the egg mixture to the flour mixture along with the peanut butter and peanuts or carob chips, and stir until well-blended.

Shape the dough into a 14 - inch log on an ungreased baking sheet, and flatten until it's about 6 inches wide. You can brush the top with a beaten egg to give it a shiny finish.

Bake 30 minutes or until firm. Remove from the oven, and reduce temperature to 250 degrees F. Cool the log before cutting it into 1/2 inch slices on a slight diagonal using a sharp, serrated knife.

Place each slice on its bottom about 1/2 inch apart on the cookie sheet so it stands upright. This way, you don't need to flip the biscotti while re-baking. Bake for about 30 minutes. Turn the oven off, but the leave the biscotti inside for several hours to harden as they cool.

Makes about 18 biscotti. Store in a tightly sealed container.

Foster homes wanted for small dogs!

We find sweet, abandoned dogs at local shelters and to save their lives, we need foster homes available. We work with many of the local bay area rescue organizations, such as Smiley Dog, Hopalong and Furry Friends, as liasons between the shelter, potential foster homes and the rescues. If you are able to open your heart and home to a sweet dog in need of a temporary, safe and loving home, please call Laurie at 510-658-7534. Foster homes are the only way we can save these small sweet dogs.

I would like to thank also the Volunteers of the dog park.I live in Hayward and bring my friends dog every so often. George is a little over 30 lbs. but he 12 and missing a leg, so we go into the small area more. George is a Cocker Spaniel. I would like to adopt a male one myself. Any one know where one might be found?
